Why Trust Wallet asks for TRX to send USDT TRC20
Updated 31 October 2026. Network costs and our price are checked on TRON mainnet; Trust Wallet's behaviour is taken from its help page and one test of ours.
Short answer
Every USDT transfer on TRON needs energy and bandwidth, so Trust Wallet needs enough TRX or USDT to pay for them. Without energy the network burns 6.43 TRX per transfer, or 13.03 TRX if the recipient has never held USDT. Trust Wallet can rent energy for you and shows the total before you confirm.
| Recipient | Network burns | Trust Wallet built-in | Quietfee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Holds USDT | 6.43 TRX | Not published | 2.51 TRX |
| Never held USDT | 13.03 TRX | 9.13 TRX (one test) | 5.02 TRX |
Why the amount changes
The price depends on the recipient. A transfer uses 64,285 energy, or 130,285 if that address has never held USDT, which can be the case with a fresh exchange deposit address. One forum user reported being asked for 27 TRX; we have not reproduced that, so read the confirmation screen before sending.
What Trust Wallet does on its own
According to its help page (21 August 2026), the wallet works with the energy provider Tronify: it rents energy when that is cheaper than the standard fee, and takes the fee in TRX or USDT, whichever is cheaper at the time. The price is not published. In our single test on 28 October 2026, a transfer to a new address cost 9.13 TRX.
If the transfer fails with TRX on the balance
Check three things. The TRX may be on another network: only TRX on TRON pays the fee. The other two causes are from Trust Wallet's help page. The address may be blacklisted by Tether: then it fails in every wallet, and only Tether support can help. Or it may be a scam multisig wallet that needs keys you do not have: Trust Wallet cannot help there and advises you to stop using that wallet.
How to pay less
You can put energy on the address before sending. With Quietfee it costs 2.51 TRX per transfer, or 5.02 TRX to a recipient without USDT, paid in TRX or USDT through the Telegram bot. Check the confirmation screen afterwards to see what the wallet will charge. For one occasional transfer the built-in option may be simpler.
